In the context of telerobotics, representatives from Vodafone and MSRM (new MIRMI: Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence) discussed robotics and AI applications, where the 5G network has great potential for technological development. The workshop covered focal points such as assistive and medical robotics, environmental robotics, robotics for the factory of the future as well as learning systems and the Internet of Things (IoT). During three days, PhD students from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Imperial College London (ICL) will have the opportunity to get an overview of the research carried out by various chairs at TUM and ICL on the subject of "Embodied Perception for Real-Time Action", find solutions to robotics challenges, visit colleagues' laboratories, and strengthen their research network. The Speinshart Monastery in the Upper Palatinate district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab could become the location for an international AI science and meeting center. The Bavarian AI Council, advisory committee that includes outstanding representatives from science and business as well as international AI experts among which are the MSRM (new MIRMI) members Prof. Alena Buyx, Prof. Alin Albu-Schäffer, Prof. Fabian Theis, and Prof. Sami Haddadin, spoke out in favor of this in its first meeting held on 15.09.2021. Students from the Bayerische EliteAkademie visited two MSRM labs located at Heßstraße 134 in Munich. They learned about embodied AI and discussed with experienced researchers the opportunities that human-centered robotics and AI will open to their future career paths. [mehr]

Cybathlon 2020 Global Edition

The Cybathlon 2020 competition will take place in November 2020 in its new Global Edition. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the event, previously programmed to take place at ETH Zürich, will be held at the teams' bases and shared online with the world. Our team, CyberTUM, will participate in the Powered ARM Prosthesis Race. This race is composed of six different tasks, which our pilot, Dr. Simona Klima, will attempt to overcome using the prosthetic device developed by our students.

For the first time, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella went on a virtual tour of Germany. He visited the Munich School of Robotics and Machine Intelligence in order to exchange ideas with the renowned robotics expert Prof. Dr. Sami Haddadin about the opportunities of new technologies such as AI and robotics and to ask questions of the students.

For the first time, the Munich School of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MSRM), the Robokind Foundation and Franka Emika were the sponsoring companies of the event Jugend Forscht. Over 80 young MINT talents competed in 51 teams in the Munich West regional competition.

Opening of MSRM

The former president of the Technical University of Munich, Prof. Wolfgang A. Herrmann welcomed guests from industry, science, politics, and society to the opening gala of MSRM as part of the 150-year celebrations of the TUM. Under the theme ”Machine Intelligence: The Science of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence“ the day included the following highlights: a scientific colloquium with lectures from many of the top robotics researchers in the world, robotics and AI research demonstrations from the scientific community of TUM, a robotics show in the evening and the reception afterwards.

Opening of Research Center Geriatronics

At the Geriatronics User and Research Center of TUM, which opened in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, robotic assistants will be developed and tested in field studies with the aim of helping old people to live independently. The project will receive support from the Bavarian state government and the municipality of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
