Studies of Robotics and AI at TUM

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) has set itself the mission of advancing robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) to sustainably meet the challenges of tomorrow in all areas of life: health, mobility, work and environment. Its approach is to place the human at the center of its research, technology development and translation at all times.

In order to meet this goal MSRM is currently building a Graduate Center. It will provide a new international MSc-program in Robotics/MI as well as advanced level courses and international short courses for PhD students.

In the meantime, the opportunity to enroll in Robotics and AI degree programs  and to contribute to research and innovation resulting in positive societal change is given at the TUM departments listed below.

TUM Departments entailing Robotics and AI

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Internet of Things, fast and secure communication, robotics, autonomous driving, electromobility, energy supply, health and much more - fast change and permanent innovation are the engines of progress and nothing works without electrical and computer engineering. In terms of sales and employees, electrical and computer engineering is one of the largest industrial sectors worldwide. High-performance electrical and electronic equipment and systems as well as corresponding efficient algorithms and networked data processing form the basis for the great future topics of our society: digitization, Industry 4.0, cyber security, energy supply and mobility of the future, aging society, etc.

Electrical and computer engineering always requires the interdisciplinary approach and the interaction of modeling, implementation and data processing, whether it is the investigation of individual effects or automated design and the creation of complex technical systems. An essential feature of the tasks in electrical and computer engineering is the scalability of solutions and systems, as well as in highly integrated circuits and in other complex, networked infrastructures. The necessary range of methods in electrical and computer engineering and its further development, itself a subject of engineering science, is thus characterized highly interdisciplinary and includes numerous fields of applied mathematics, computer science and physics.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Technical University of Munich - one of the largest and leading engineering departments in Germany - is committed to this self-understanding and is characterized by a close linkage of a strongly basic as well as application-oriented teaching and research.

Department of Informatics

TUM Department of Informatics covers a wide spectrum of topics in research: from software engineering to parallel, distributed, and mobile systems, scientific computing, knowledge-based systems, and robotics. Interdisciplinary and application-oriented research is of high importance, and as a result, fields like bioinformatics, medical informatics, information systems, and engineering informatics are becoming more and more important. And our professors are not just working with neighboring departments on campus in Garching – the connections extend beyond the boundaries of the university.

Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics on the Research Campus in Garching plays a central role at the TUM. We are on the front line in important contemporary research and offer our students a solid and modern mathematics education – within our department, in engineering subjects and for teacher training courses.

Department of Mechanical Engineering

The students of the Department of Mechanical Eningeering learn in an environment which is characterised by creative determination and a love of technology. With numerous spin-off companies, students at the department are part of an entrepreneurial university which researches sustainable, efficient solutions for the people of the future.

New Courses

Intelligent Machine Design Lab (IMDL)

The I.MDL - Intelligent Machine Design Lab is part of a multi-semester course series, which aims to enable TUM master's students to develop and build complex and powerful mechatronic systems with high social and economic relevance. Students learn to develop product ideas independently and to transfer them step-by-step into near-series product prototypes. After completing the module series, students will be able to evolve complex mechatronic-system projects. Particular focus is placed on the development of multi-disciplinary design and integration skills and their use in an interdisciplinary team.
